Allow me to reintroduce myself…

Although I’ve been at the Barrie Athletic club since August, there are still members that I am meeting/getting to know so I thought my first blog post should tell you a bit about me; Patrick Savoury Fitness Coordinator/Personal Trainer.

In the beginning

I grew up in Shelburne, Nova Scotia and was very much into Soccer and Basketball growing up both as a player and, as I got older, a coach. I attained my Bachelor of Kinesiology from Acadia University with an intent to become a Phys Ed teacher.  However after taking some of my first Fitness based classes, and practicing for practical tests, I became hooked.  I also took some activity labs to expand my sport knowledge so that I could apply my fitness skills to that environment.

The next episode

Once I had my first Fitness certification I began instructing at gyms right away.  I started with the Hi/Low Impact, Step, and Strength style classes.  As I learned more I began to branch out into Stability Ball, BOSU, Core Board and circuit style classes.  I even had a few years where I taught some Hip Hop Fitness classes (feel free to ask me about my Hip Hop dance troupe audition sometime)!

Attennn-TION!

About six months after graduation I began working for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as a Fitness and Sports (F&S) Instructor.  I remained in this position for 5.5 years, including a 6-month tour in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  During my time as a F&S Instructor I was able to prepare the CAF members for their annual fitness evaluation, help them train for specific trades and maintain their high levels of physical fitness while on course, or while deployed.  Additionally I was able to train CAF Firefighters, Search and Rescue Technicians, Military Police, as well as those looking to get into the more elite special forces.  My job was to ensure, whatever the trade, that the CAF member was prepared for duty and could perform all of their tasks, and at times extra tasks, at a moments notice.

To be continued…

My time working for the military combined with my ongoing education in the fitness field helped me to develop my “Operationally Ready” training style.  As a trainer, I will look at not only your fitness goals but also your occupation, activities you are involved in and likes/dislikes to create a program that makes you the best YOU possible! If you are an athlete, a stay at home parent, an accountant or a delivery driver you always need to be at the top of your game!

I look forward to seeing you at the Barrie Athletic club to help you get to your elite self!
